Stone Fire Pit Design Ideas You’ll Love

Whether you opt for a true stone fire pit or a Unilock design that is durable, cost-effective, and easy to install, the design ideas for your fire pit are endless.

Explore some of our top design ideas to elevate your outdoor space.

1. Outdoor Lights

Brighten up your outdoor space and create a rustic look and feel with outdoor lights.

Outdoor lighting fixtures provide a welcoming ambiance and help your guests navigate your backyard safely. Outdoor lighting options include chandeliers, hanging lamps, table lamps, and string lights.

To illuminate your outdoor space and save electricity, opt for LED lights instead of incandescent lighting.

2. Privacy Plants

Transform your backyard into a private outdoor oasis using landscape gardening

Some popular plants for privacy include trees that will grow over time to provide shade, shrubs that offer wide coverage areas, or vine plants that climb trellises, incorporating nature into your surroundings.

3. Accent Pavers

Add drama and visual interest to your monochromatic stone fire pit by installing accent pavers around the area.

Opt for accent pavers in warm earth tones, deep reds, burgundies, muted grays, and faded whites for a rustic look, or cooler, accent colors in gray or blue for a more contemporary look.

Some popular accent pavers include Copthorne® and Nordic Cobble.

4. A Pop of Color

Turn your outdoor space into a little slice of heaven by incorporating some cozy outdoor chairs, pillows, or other design elements that will evoke pops of color in your space.

When choosing an accent color, use a color wheel to narrow down your choices to two color schemes.

For example, if you have a light gray stone fire pit (which has blue or green undertones), you can pair it with cooler shades of the color wheel, such as green, blue, or light purple. These colors tend to pair well, thanks to their shared temperature or undertone.

5. Mixed Textures and Materials

Mixing textures and materials can infuse your outdoor space with captivating visual and textural interest.

Place wood chairs around your stone fire pit, or adorn your seating with outdoor throw pillows and blankets in complementary accent colors to create depth and contrast.

6. Vibrant Colors

Bright, vibrant colors can turn a muted fire pit area into a bohemian haven.

Set up lounge chairs and sofas in bold and vibrant hues, such as saturated blues, purples, pinks, and fiery oranges. Add pillows, blankets, and other design pieces that create a colorful outdoor space for your family and friends to enjoy.

Stone Fire Pit FAQs

1. What are stone fire pits made of?

Stone fire pits are typically constructed using a variety of materials that can withstand high temperatures and resist weathering, including:

  • Concrete pavers or blocks: Concrete pavers are pre-cast concrete blocks designed to create durable and attractive hardscaping projects. Concrete pavers can also be shaped and styled to mimic the appearance of natural stone.
  • Marble: Marble is a type of metamorphic rock that forms from the recrystallization of limestone under intense heat and pressure.  Marble often has a polished appearance, which can be utilized to enhance the ambiance of any space, and deliver a luxurious, sophisticated look and feel.
  • Limestone: Limestone is a sedimentary rock that primarily consists of calcium carbonate. Limestone exhibits a delightful range of colors but commonly comes in white, gray, or yellow hues. Compared to marble, limestone is more porous, making it susceptible to weathering.
  • Granite: Granite is a common type of igneous rock that is widely recognized for its exceptional durability, timeless appeal, and resistance to heat and weathering. It is primarily composed of quartz.

Unilock tip: Not all natural stones can withstand high temperatures and may break down under extreme heat. In such cases, a protective metal insert or a heat-rated fire brick lining is necessary.

2. Can I build a stone fire pit myself?

Yes, you can definitely build a stone fire pit yourself with proper planning and adherence to safety guidelines. When considering your fire pit design, think about whether you prefer a raised or sunken style, and whether a round or square shape would best suit your space. Additionally, explore different types of pavers and colors to customize your fire feature to fit seamlessly into your outdoor area.

Remember to ensure that your fire pit choice harmonizes with the overall aesthetic of your home. However, if you have limited DIY experience and lack the equipment needed to build a stone fire pit, consider hiring a Unilock Authorized Contractor

3. How do I maintain a fire pit?

To maintain your outdoor fire pit:

  • Clean the area regularly: Remove any debris, ashes, or leftover wood from the fire pit after use. Use a stiff brush and dustpan, or a shovel to remove the ashes.
  • Inspect for potential damage: Inspect your stone fire pit for any cracks, loose stones, or signs of wear and tear before each use. Promptly repair or replace damaged stones with heat-appropriate adhesives or mortars to ensure the structural integrity of the fire pit.
  • Clear vegetation: Keep the area around the fire pit clear of any flammable materials, such as dry grass, leaves, or overhanging branches to reduce the risk of accidental fires.
  • Use the right fuel: Avoid using soft wood, such as pine or cedar, as they can pop and throw sparks. Instead, use seasoned hardwood in your fire pit, such as oak and maple. In addition, avoid using wood that has been treated or painted, as it can release harmful fumes when burned.
  • Do not overload your fire pit: Be careful not to overload your fire pit with too much wood, as it can lead to an uncontrollable fire and can damage your fire pit over time.
  • Use water or non-combustible sand to extinguish flames: While the extreme temperature change of dousing a fire with water may cause damage to your fire pit, water is still the safest bet in extinguishing leftover flames. Lining your fire pit with a metal or fire brick insert will help ensure any potential water damage to your fire pit is nonexistent or minimal. As an alternative, pour a bucket of non-combustible sand over the fire pit if water is not easily accessible.
  • Use a protective cover: Use a waterproof fire pit cover when you aren’t using your fire pit to prevent moisture buildup, so you can extend your fire pit’s structural integrity. If your wood is sparking a lot, consider adding a spark screen.
  • Check your fire pit for signs of rust: If your fire pit has metal components, such as a grill grate, metal insert, or spark screen, check them regularly for signs of rust. Remove any rust spots with a wire brush and apply a heat-resistant paint or coating to prevent future corrosion.
