Debunking Common Hardscape Misconceptions

Hardscaping is a popular way to enhance the functionality, beauty, and value of outdoor spaces. However, despite its growing popularity, there have been a few misconceptions that have surfaced and have caused confusion among homeowners. We want to debunk the most common hardscaping misconceptions and provide you with accurate information that will help you make informed decisions about your next hardscaping project.

Is hardscaping worth the investment?

While it’s true that any outdoor renovation comes with a price tag, it’s important to note that regardless which products you choose, the cost of pavers only account for approximately 20% of the overall budget. The rest of the cost of the project comes down to labor. Complex designs take longer to install vs basic designs. But even a basic design can add to your investment. Hardscaping has a significant impact on the curb appeal of your property, making it an excellent way to enhance your outdoor living space.

Can you repair a chipped paver?

Repairing a chipped paver is significantly much  easier compared to fixing a poured-in-place concrete patio. Replacing a poured-in-place concrete patio or asphalt would require a complete demolition and replacement process, which can be costly. However, simply removing and replacing the affected pavers with new ones is a hassle-free, cost-efficient solution.

Tip: when you have your project initially installed, keep a few stones in the corner of your garage in case you need to make a repair.

How do you prevent pavers from shifting?

The best defense against paver shifting is installing a good edge restraint. The second defense is to make sure that the level of jointing sand is maintained at the correct height. Jointing sand is made up of  fine and coarse sand blend  that will lock pavers in place to make them impenetrable to shifting under the weight of foot and vehicle traffic.

What are the color choices of pavers?

Unilock pavers are all about versatility and style, and that’s why we strive to offer a rainbow of hues to complement  and enhance your home’s exterior.

Do brick pavers fade over time?

Pavers are bound to fade due to wear and tear as well as exposure to the elements. However, the aging process of pavers is diminished when using pavers manufactured with innovative technologies like EnduraColor, which helps resist fading for years after installation. Factory sealed products with EasyClean™, are also protected from fading, extending their longevity.

Do weeds always grow through pavers?

Weeds will grow almost anywhere. Fortunately with advancements in paver installation, base materials and jointing sands,  weeds are no longer a problem.. Ask your Unilock Authorized Contractor about installing the pavers on an open-graded base. Using open graded base materials, prevents weed seeds from germinating and taking root. Additionally, once the pavers have been laid, filling the spaces between them with polymeric sand is highly recommended, as it too effectively blocks weed growth.

Are pavers environmentally friendly?

As opposed to Petroleum-based products such as asphalt, concrete pavers are a much more environmentally friendly product and can be reused when taken up and reinstated elsewhere.  Permeable pavers are also an environmental solution, because they allow for rainwater to percolate through to the subsoil below, rather than running off into the streets or surrounding landscape. When rainwater is allowed to percolate back into the soil, the natural water-table is maintained thereby helping trees and other vegetation.. Hardscaping has come a long way in recent years and can be designed to be not only beautiful and functional but also environmentally conscious.

Does hardscaping add value?

Hardscaping not only serves a functional purpose, but can be designed to be aesthetically pleasing. Unilock pavers can be selected to replicate the architectural features of a home, and can be used to design fantastic outdoor features that will allow you to make the most of your outdoor space year round, including fire pits, outdoor kitchens, pool decks, walkways and water features.
