With the homeowners selling their existing home earlier than expected, and anxiously awaiting the go-ahead for their new one, Unilock Authorized Contractor, Hummel’s Landscape Inc, worked quickly to overcome the challenges the site presented. Due the time crunch, there were over 8 different subcontractors working on different elements of the home’s construction all at the same time, and all in a tightly confined backyard space. The placement of the custom inground pool meant that many of the utilities had to be run under the pool patio, making the installation of the pavers that much more challenging.
The largest challenge of the project, however, was definitely drainage. Because of strict erosion and drainage requirements posed by the township, all roof and surface water runoff needed to be tightly controlled. Perfectly integrated planting beds were bermed high to address the negative slope on the neighboring property and several lawn drains were incorporated into the landscape design plans.
A true extension of the main home, this backyard design brings together gently sweeping curves, integrated plantings, and elegant hardscape design in perfect harmony. With the landscape construction work spanning over 2 month’s time, Hummel’s Landscape maintained an incredible eye for detail right through to the very end.
The serpentine edges of the custom gunite swimming pool are finished with a dark charcoal grey coping from the Unilock Natural Stone collection. The smooth, dark lines of this sleek coping play beautifully off the muted, naturalistic hues of main pool patio featuring Unilock Beacon Hill Flagstone pavers. Sweeping in a running bond pattern around the outside border of the patio, Burgundy Red Copthorne pavers draw the eye to the adjacent lawn area located seamlessly on the same elevation.
Making entertaining a dream, guests can mingle in the transitional spaces or settle in to one of the separately denoted outdoor rooms; one located on each side of the gunite pool. Semi-circular seating walls frame out a sunken fire pit area located next to the sunning ledge of the pool; Unilock Sunset Fire Pit sits centered for conversation and marshmallow roasting. Across the other side of the pool sits a set of chaise lounges with Unilock Richcliff pavers offering contrast to the patio floor. This Hershey, Pa backyard was finished off with a full low-voltage landscape lighting system, lawn areas of lush sod, and an irrigation system for keeping the turf and plantings happy and healthy.
Perhaps offering one of the biggest impacts on the overall outdoor space is the fact that the main patio areas are set at the same level as the home’s sliding backdoors and screened-in patio. What may seem like a minor detail truly transforms the landscape, making it feel seamlessly integrated with the interior living spaces of the home.
This project won Best Backyard and Best in Show at the Unilock 2016 Awards of Excellence.
