Weaver’s Landscape Company of Shippensburg, PA, Uses Unilock DriveGrid to Reinforce Backyard Hardscape
Unilock Authorized Contractor, Weaver’s Landscape Company specialize in designing and constructing robust yet aesthetically pleasing hardscapes in and around Shippensburg, PA. In this particular backyard hardscape project, they’ve opted to include the Unilock DriveGrid for additional strength and reinforcement, as well as to reduce the amount of materials needed.
The project entails paving a substantial portion of this backyard, including the poolside surrounds, and patio area. As part of the pool’s structure, the area immediately surrounding the pool consists of a poured concrete paver base. The pool deck, however, will extend much further than this. In order to do this, an open-graded, clean stone base will be built up to the level of the concrete pool edge. This will result in a seamless paved surface.
The first step is bringing in the Unilock DriveGrid. The Unilock DriveGrid weighs a mere 57 lbs, which means that it’s easy to transport and light enough for a single crew member to carry and roll out.
The DriveGrid is rolled out over the excavated area. Each roll contains 13’ X 120’ of grid – a substantial area per roll. The DriveGrid will not only help to strengthen the pool deck once it is complete, it will also help to stabilise the aggregate while the base is being built up. The DriveGrid also saves the crew time by ensuring that they do not dig up any more ground around the pool casing. As well as being time consuming, additional excavation could disturb the pool’s foundations and cause damage to the pool.
Once the DriveGrid is rolled out to cover the area, and cut to size, adjustments can be made to the sheets to ensure that they line up correctly. An overlap of approximately 12 inches will help to ensure strength throughout the surface.
The crew then spikes down the edges of the DriveGrid to keep it taut and prevent it from shifting around while the aggregate is poured into place and evenly spread.
The company’s Bobcat Compact Track Loader makes quick work of pouring and spreading the aggregate. Because of the strengthening and stabilizing qualities of the Unilock DriveGrid, the amount of aggregate needed for the base is substantially reduced, with the minimum depth of aggregate needed now being only 4”.
Finally, a compactor is rolled out over the base. The Unilock DriveGrid is now invisible beneath the surface. It’s benefits, however, will continue to enhance this backyard hardscape.
