Relaxed Patio Design by Barry Bros. Landscape Design LLC. of St. James, NY
This modest patio was brought to life by Barry Bros. Landscape Design, based in St. James, NY. The patio features a fire pit, low wall and plenty of open space in which the paver selection is allowed to shine.
Beacon Hill Smooth pavers in the crisp Steel Mountain shade were selected for this patio because they have cool undertones that match the siding of the home. This underlines the importance of any landscaping endeavour complementing the home in order to create a harmonious and cohesive end result. Creating a hardscape that clashes with the aesthetic theme of the adjacent home can leave the home looking out of place, as opposed to being the focal feature of the property. Contrasts can be achieved between home and hardscape, but should be carefully planned, balanced and executed. Barry Bros. Landscape Design have done an excellent job in bringing this home and yard together.
A dark border outlines the patio and matching banding adorns the vertical structures. This helps to tie the expanse of concrete pavers and vertical elements of the patio together into one cohesive end product.
The low wall enclosing a corner of the patio serves to define the edge of the paved area and punctuate the design. It also provides more substance in the vertical dimension, enhancing the depth of the design.
The low wall is constructed using Brussels Dimensional System wall units in the Limestone color variation. Brussels Dimensional System offers clients the look and feel of real natural stone at a fraction of the price and is, as a result, a popular choice. These wall units have weathered surfaces that give ordinary structures an antiqued appearance. The textured wall pairs beautifully with the smooth, linear siding of the home and the zero-bevel pavers underfoot, adding depth and variation to the design.
Although the low wall clearly demarcates the outdoor living space, it also doubles as a seat wall and provides a casual setting in which guests can enjoy the warm glow of the fire. The wall mimics the shape of the fire pit, which is not only pleasing to the eye, but also creates a conversational space which facilitates relaxed, intimate gatherings.
