This steeply sloped property called for a large-scale curved retaining wall to create a series of patio, walkway and garden areas.
The curved retaining walls were created using Unilock Mackinaw Wall in Grindstone. Where traditional concrete block retaining walls have a reputation for being unsightly, necessary evils, Mackinaw Wall is different. Its split limestone appearance, which was created using Reala technology, naturally softens the look while solid construction allows it to handle the load. Each random bundle of Mackinaw Wall comes in three different sizes containing a variety of surfaces, designed for efficient installation in curved, or linear designs. Coping stones can be added, but are not required. The owners of this property opted to forego coping which allows for a more rustic look.
Mackinaw Wall is used along the entire property at different heights, with its warm, earthy tones conveyed through a taller retaining wall to encapsulate a beautiful garden space, and lower retaining walls to create additional seating areas throughout the patio. The charming and gentle curves created reveal a more refined space with softened edges that capitalizes on form and function, without sacrificing beauty.
The patio bed adjacent to the taller curved retaining wall uses Unilock Holland Premier with a dark accent border to help guide your eyes from one end to the other as you walk along the walkway. Unilock Courtstone pavers in Basalt were laid along the outer wall of the home next to the lower retaining wall, with jointing sand applied between the pavers to help keep the Courtstone pavers in place to avoid shifting under pressure. The result is a beautifully crafted outdoor space that feels like you’re taking a stroll through a picturesque, European courtyard. With the right idea, vertical features can create rooms or add seating to your patio.
