Motor City Landscaping uses Richcliff Pavers to Create a Patio Designed for Outdoor Living in Rochester Hills, MI
This multi-use patio in Rochester Hills, MI was designed and built by Motor City Landscaping. The homeowners wanted to revitalize their backyard with an extended living space for entertaining and relaxing. The tiered patio uses Richcliff pavers in a combination of Dawn Mist and Pebble Taupe with Copthorne borders in the 3 Color Blend color option.
The new patio includes areas for lounging, dining, cooking and socializing. The design creates separate zones for each activity that allows the owners to really make the most of their backyard. Having dual access points to the patio from the house helps create flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Plant beds flanking the stairs and firepit soften the hardscape and help to bring color and texture to the patio.
A slight grade in the backyard required some creativity during the initial design stage. Rather than have the patio level with the house, the contractor added steps leading from the house, down to the patio surface. By lowering the patio slightly, Motor City Landscaping created increased privacy in the open yard. The fire pit is sunken down another step to create a cozy gathering spot. Additional steps lead down from the patio out onto the lawn.
Richcliff pavers were chosen for the patio because of their textured surface that resembles natural flagstone. The combination of Dawn Mist and Pebble Taupe color choices also adds to the natural stone appearance. But their modular cut and clean lines provide a modern touch that makes Richliff pavers compatible with almost any landscape style. And they are up to four times stronger than regular poured concrete.
The rich color of the Copthorne borders and accents complement the classic red brick exterior of the client’s home. They are very happy with both stone choices and love the look of the combined colors. The Unilock EnduraColor Plus finish will ensure that the colors remain true for years to come. A coordinating walkway leads visitors from the front of the house around a classic stone birdbath creatively used as a planter.
The outdoor grill island includes a grill with storage space under a granite countertop. A row of vertical Copthorne pavers creates a unique backsplash behind the cooking and food prep area. The wood-burning pizza oven, which has turned out to be one of the client’s favorite additions, also features Copthorne details. The height of these vertical masonry elements provides some screening from nearby neighbors.
This Unilock project of the week from 2015 was a big success. Especially the fire pit which was not part of the original plan, but has turned out to be the homeowner’s favorite part of the new backyard. The whole family loves spending time gathered around the fire enjoying homemade pizza!
