Knutsen Landscaping, Inc. Preps for Backyard Project with Manual Root Removal in Lancaster, PA
Unilock Authorized Contractor, Knutsen Landscaping, Inc. were tasked with creating a patio and softscape to match this serene backyard in Lancaster, PA. The hardscape includes a U-Cara Multi-Face Wall System enclosing a Beacon Hill Flagstone patio. The hardscape is accented by a Courtstone border and U-Cara Universal Coping.
Before a new hardscape can be constructed, a fresh flower bed can be installed, or new turf can be laid, contractors will often find themselves facing the task of removing stubborn roots from the ground. The easiest method of lifting roots (and all of the surrounding ground) is by tearing into the soil with heavy, mechanised digging equipment. Unfortunately, this is not always an option. Lack of access, environmental regulations, existing infrastructure, and utility lines can all limit the use of heavy machinery. In addition, bringing out the heavy equipment is sometimes not worth the time and cost, given the scale of the obstacle at hand. For this project, Knutsen Landscaping, Inc. were forced to settle for lightweight machines and rely predominantly on manpower.
The lightweight grader employed by the Knutsen Landscaping crew is sufficient for leveling land that has already been cleared of organic debris, but is no match for the thick root systems present on the property. By manually softening the ground with pickaxes and shovels, the crew gradually loosens the ground in order to allow for the removal of large roots. In certain cases, dousing the ground with water may help to soften the soil. It may not be possible, nor necessary to remove long tap roots, instead, the taproots can be hacked off at a level that is deep enough to accommodate the project. Thereafter, the stump can be pulled free from the ground.

Smaller roots can then be pulled out easily by hand, and any remaining organic debris can be collected to be removed from the site. With the site cleared, Knutsen Landscaping, Inc. can continue with the next step of the project. We look forward to seeing this design in its entirety.
