Fluid Transitions and a Wide Range of Textures Characterize this Stunning Project by John’s Asphalt in Shelton, CT

This fluid transition between driveway, walkway and patio was achieved by John’s Asphalt in Shelton, CT. The contractor opted for Beacon Hill Flagstone in the rich Fossil color variation and used the same paver throughout the hardscape for a ‘put-together’ property in which each area flows into the next. The Fossil color variation is characterised by the exquisite pairing of warm and cool shades, creating captivating surfaces with a subtly distressed look.

Beacon Hill Flagstone pavers bear a distinct flagstone-like appearance, making them perfect partners to stone and light brick walls. The utilization of Beacon Hill Flagstone in this patio complements the stunning curved wall and natural vegetation beyond, giving the entire area a relaxed look and feel.

Basalt Copthorne pavers were utilized as accent pavers throughout the patio, contributing the look and feel of brick to this hardscape design’s already extensive array of textures.

While pavers 2.3 inches (6cm) thick were utilized for the patio, thicker units of 8cm had to be acquired for the driveway as these pavers will experience greater loads and tractive forces. The load requirements of a driveway also dictate that a deeper base be excavated. The depth of a paver base can also depend on the existing soil conditions and capacity for drainage, as well as the thickness of the pavers. Once a driveway has been excavated, the soil should be thoroughly compacted to optimize its load-bearing capacity. Soil compaction also reduces the impact of freeze-thaw cycles on the placement of pavers and prevents settlement.

The bulk of the driveway was constructed using Basalt Courtstone pavers. These pavers have a pleasant cobblestone look that clients adore for their suburban driveways. They are also structurally suited to vehicular applications as Unilock Ultima Concrete Technology imbues each paver with up to four times the compressive strength of poured concrete.

Once the pavers have all been laid, they will be cleaned and sealed with the help of Top Notch Landscaping LLC.
