The Indianapolis Motor Speedway completed one its largest renovations in its 107 year history, just in time for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in May of 2016. Project 100 included $92 million of renovations that included a brand new entrance to replace the old gate that has been at the track since 1909

!melk created the master plan to connect the downtown campus to the Jewlery District for the expansion of Brown University. The revitalization drew inspiration from the past life of the area, the sea port and old stone roads. The sidewalks along the McAlpert Medical Building and the new public square energize the former industrial area, setting a precedent for the design of a new urban destination in the center of the Jewelry District. For over 325 years a building has stood on the east bank of the Farmington River. Once a Grist Mill, this historic landmark has had the identity of a residence, boutique shop, fabric store, a bookstore and even a successful restaurant. In 2014 the building and land was donated to the Miss Porter’s School, Farmington, Connecticut’s premier college preparatory school that excels in academics and athletics. This captivating site would be transformed into the new admissions building During the renovation the school saw the importance of preserving the historic features and character.What was once a sea of asphalt parking the exterior of the site was converted into an arrival garden and accessible walk. It was important to find and use materials that would keep the feel of the site and stand the test of time.

This new, state-of-the-art multi-purpose arena is the home rink for Bentley University’s hockey team and host to a variety of campus-wide events. Bentley Arena now holds the title of the most environmentally sustainable ice arena in the country. Thoughtful implementation of sustainable design and energy efficiencies demonstrates Bentley’s commitment to innovation and environmentally sustainable practices, an exemplary model for other academic institutions to follow.

Chicago’s historic Navy Pier completed phase 1 of its re-imagination to celebrate their 100th anniversary. The 50 acres of urban lakefront is a spectacular global destination and new model of sustainability that transforms this world class destination. A more open and tree-lined South Dock Promenade, as well as an expansive and newly developed Polk Bros. Park and Fountain were created. The resulting ‘pierscape’ invites visitors to escape the hard edges of the city and enjoy unfettered views of the majestic open waters of Lake Michigan in a more natural setting. The Rogers Centre, formerly the Skydome, was a modern marvel in professional sports with a retractable roof and the largest scoreboard in the world when it was built in 1989. In 2017, it was time for some updates, the image of the baseball team had changed and the expectation of the fan experience had also changed.

The new Chicago Flagship celebrates the pure simplicity and enduring authenticity of McDonald’s, welcoming both residents and visitors to a playful and informal gathering place in the heart of the city. The site is a full city block, just steps off Michigan Avenue, occupied since 1983 by the iconic “Rock ‘n Roll” McDonald’s. The new design rebalances car-pedestrian traffic creating a city oasis where people can eat, drink and meet. Landscape area was increased to include an expansive pedestrian-centric space, a restaurant in a civic plaza with outdoor seating, park area and more than 70 trees as well as native and drought resilient plants throughout.

The building site was well under construction when the City of Grand Rapids decided to add an engaging public space at this corner. The challenge was to design a public gateway to the Monroe North district of downtown Grand Rapids, within a narrow window of time in order to make modifications to designed building and site components prior to their imminent construction. The final design suggests a boardwalk, using plank pavers through a riparian area which includes rain gardens and infiltration basins. The intent was to evoke movement through the space, while embracing the relationship to the Grand River which is only a block away, and providing areas of respite for downtown visitors and employees.

Located in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, the Loews Chicago Hotel is know for its high-class luxury. Constructed in 2015, Wolff Landscape Architecture successfully designed a unique urban terrace space. The expansive rooftop space provides occupants with the ultimate retreat including impressive city and river views. From grassy lawn areas used for lounging or games, beautifully lined with seasonal floral and greenery, to lounging cabanas, high top tables and two terrace bar areas this has become a destination for nice weather days and evenings.

The Bloor-Yorkville BIA (Business Improvement Area) worked with The Planning Partnership in Toronto to develop a master plan for Yorkville Avenue, one of the premier shopping districts in Toronto. The design focused on creating a pedestrian friendly environment using appropriately durable materials and construction methods to ensure the roadway and sidewalks would withstand the harsh winter environment.
