Creative Stone uses Bold Contrast to create Stunning Borders and Banding for Patio in Oxford, CT
This backyard patio and walkway project by Unilock Authorized Contractor, Creative Stone, makes use of boldly contrasting borders and banding to highlight both vertical features and paved surfaces. The contrast is achieved using a variety of well-coordinated pavers from opposite ends of the color spectrum.
The vertical elements of this design include a low wall that runs along the perimeter of the patio. The wall features Brussels Dimensional System wall units in the Sandstone color option. This has been paired with Town Hall banding in Basalt to create an intense contrast and a motif that is repeated throughout the design.
A similar effect is echoed in the patio flooring. The primary patio paver is Beacon Hill Flagstone in the Sierra color option. This main field is bordered by a single stretcher course of Copthorne pavers in Basalt, a course of Brussels Block pavers in Sandstone to repeat the Sandstone coloring and texture of the wall, and lastly, another single stretcher course of Copthorne to close off the pattern.
The Basalt coloring of the Copthorne and Town Hall pavers is in turn picked up by dark wrought iron furniture and outdoor lighting fixtures. The latter are mounted on pillars positioned intermittently throughout the low wall system. Ledgestone coping and Ledgestone Pillar Caps chosen in the Buff color option have been used as a finishing touch to the design.
In addition, the Ledgestone coping presents a smooth, level surface on which to sit, transforming these low walls into additional seating should it be required. While presenting a textured edge, Ledgestone coping won’t snag on skin or clothing, making it a good option for finishing off seating walls.
A walkway, mirroring the design of the patio, leads to the patio and provides access from the side of the home. Importantly, the design looks just as bold and eye-catching from outside the area as it does from inside.
To soften the strong dark and light contrasts and to add pops of color to the area, Creative Stone have made strategic use of brightly colored flowers and plantings. These plantings have been placed in pots in raised gravel beds, however the option exists for the homeowners to turn these into more densely vegetated flower beds.
