The running bond laying pattern is typically associated with brick-style pavers because of its history as a reliable stacking pattern for bricks and rectangular stone blocks used for building vertical structures. The aesthetic has since carried over to horizontal surfaces. The running bond pattern is just as dependable for paving as it is for walls. The pattern creates a dependable interlock, resulting in a flexible, durable surface. The running bond pattern is also visually interesting and can create the optical illusion of width or length, depending on the direction in which the pavers are laid.

Above All Masonry Design and Outdoor Living have given this traditional aesthetic a twist by incorporating XL Beacon Hill Smooth pavers. These pavers are substantially larger than the brick-style pavers, such as Copthorne, that are typically used with this pattern, measuring in at a massive 20.875″ X 34.625″ X 2.375″. In addition, the running bond laying pattern is unusual for a modern design, being strongly tied to more traditional style themes. However, because of the smooth surface texture of Beacon Hill Smooth, as well as the cool grey coloring of the Steel Mountain color option, and the zero-bevel edge of the paver, the pool deck echoes – and remains altogether compatible with – the modern geometric design of the swimming pool.

The pavers have been laid on top of a bed of clean, coarse bedding sand and open graded gravel base. To keep the pavers aligned and leave enough room for the pool’s border, border paver spacers have been used. Once the heavier pavers have been laid, the smaller pavers are easier to slot in between the large pool deck pavers and the coping.
